Book Week 2026: A symphony of stories and 14 years of charlies
Every August, something magical happens in Australia. Book Week arrives, and with it comes a wave of colour, creativity, and pure childhood joy.

This year’s theme, Symphony of Stories, feels especially fitting. Stories really do create their own music. They lift, soothe, energise, and empower. And for the past 14 years, I’ve been lucky enough to witness a very special melody within that symphony: the arrival of Book Week Cheer Chick Charlies.
It starts with a ping on my phone. A tag on Instagram. A message in my inbox. A parent sharing a moment that means the world to me.
And suddenly, there she is. A bright, confident, smiling Charlie, dressed head‑to‑toe in cheer, kindness, and courage.
Sometimes she’s holding one book. Sometimes the whole series. Sometimes she’s mid‑cartwheel or scorpion. Sometimes she’s shy and proud all at once. Every single photo is different, but they all carry the same heartbeat.
I will never grow tired of receiving these photos.
For 14 years, they’ve arrived like little love notes from readers across Australia. Reminders that Charlie’s message is still resonating, still inspiring, still helping kids feel brave and seen.
Every time a parent shares a Book Week Charlie, it warms my soul in a way I can’t fully put into words. It’s humbling. It’s joyful. It’s the kind of magic that keeps an author writing.
And the truth is… I hope it continues for a very long time.
To every family who has ever dressed up as Charlie, shared a photo, tagged me, emailed me, or simply read the books together at bedtime, thank you. You are part of this Symphony of Stories. You are part of Charlie’s world. And you are part of mine.
If your child is dressing as Charlie this year, I would love to see them. You can share your photos by tagging @CheerChickCharlie on your socials.
Here’s to Book Week 2026. Here’s to the Symphony of Stories. And here’s to every Charlie, past, present, and still to come.
